It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Unfortunately, it’s also the time of year that my family always tends to catch colds.

My mother-in-law had this drink simmering the last time we were at her house and it was seriously the best thing for our sore throats.

Keep the leftovers in the fridge and then heat up a cup when you need something to warm you up and soothe your throat.

how to pick perfectly ripe cranberries:

-Cranberries are nicknamed bounce berries. Cranberries are bouncy when they are perfectly ripe. Not that you should bounce all your cranberries before adding them to the mixture, but something to check if you are unsure on a few cranberries.

-Cranberries don’t ripen after being picked off the vine. If they have brown spots on them, they are over ripe. Wrinkly cranberries are also over ripe.

can i use frozen instead of fresh, cranberries?

Fresh cranberries are definitely preferred for this recipe, however, frozen cranberries work just as well. The look of fresh cranberries has a better presentation.

However, the frozen cranberries work great, and have the same great taste. They will leak a little juice as they thaw, and it will cause a bit of a different color in the punch.

cooking cranberries:

When combining the cranberries with the water, cook the cranberries only until they burst. You then strain them out of the mixture so it isn’t mushy.

I love the color of this punch. It is so bright and refreshing, and has the most amazing smell, but straining the chunks out of it, is key to making this a mouth watering holiday drink.

  • 3 cups fresh cranberries
  • 6 1/2 cups water, divided
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • dash of cloves
  • 2/3 cup orange juice
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 2-4 cinnamon sticks
  • fresh cranberries and orange slices for garnish

  1. Place cranberries and 2 1/2 cups of water in a large saucepan. Bring water to a boil and cook over medium heat until the berries pop (takes about 15-20 minutes).
  2. Strain through a fine sieve (strainer), reserving the juice and discarding the cranberry skins. Pour the juice into a large bowl and set bowl aside.
  3. In a large saucepan, combine the rest of the water (4 cups) and 1 1/2 cups sugar, cinnamon, and cloves. Bring water to a boil and cook until sugar is completely dissolved.
  4. Pour water into bowl with cranberry juice, then add orange juice, lemon juice, and cinnamon sticks. Mix well and serve.
  5. Garnish with fresh cranberries and sliced oranges.

You can keep this warm by keeping it on the stovetop on low or in a crock pot on low, stirring well before serving. It is also delicious served chilled.
