is it hard to blanch the almonds so that they look like a fingernail?
We have been blanching our own almonds for years. It is so easy, and only takes a few minutes.
We often buy almonds in the bulk section of the grocery store because they are a lot cheaper when you bag them yourself. You can save money and only purchase the amount of almonds that you will need for your recipe.
Bring a few cups of water to a full rolling boil. You will want to boil enough water so that the almonds are completely immersed. Pour the boiling water over the almonds and let set for 1 minute.
After 1 minute, drain the hot water off of the almonds and run cold water over them to rinse them off.
After rinsing the almonds under cold water, drain well. Then spread the drained almonds out on a paper towel to dry. You will notice that the skins are wrinkly and shriveled up.
The hot and cold water treatment helps the skins to slip off easily from each almond. Slip off the skins when they are cool enough to handle.
It’s an easy process and now you have the perfect blanched almond for your Spooky Witch Finger Cookies. They make the perfect fingernail.
do you have to make the fingers green?
You can easily leave out the green food coloring so your witch fingers will be the color of the cookie dough.
They will still look spooky when you add the red gel around the fingernail and the gel at the end of the finger.
We have made these Spooky Witch Fingers green and white. The color will not effect the taste in any way.
ingredients needed for spooky witch finger cookies
- Powdered Sugar
- Almond Extract
- Baking Powder
- Green Food Coloring
- Red Decorating Gel
- Strawberry or Raspberry Jam (seedless)
*Pro Tip: If you can’t find the red gel, you can use jam around the almond fingernail. It looks just as creepy.
how to make spooky witch finger cookies
Here are the ingredients needed for this spooky dessert that will kick off your Halloween party!
The blanched almonds are not shown in the picture above. Scroll up to see the blanching process for your almonds. You will need about 30-36 almonds for the fingernails.
- In a large mixing bowl beat together the softened butter, powdered sugar, egg, vanilla, and almond extract. Almond extract is our favorite flavor that comes shining through in these cookies.
- Stir in salt, baking powder, and flour and mix until combined well.
- Add in green food coloring until you get the green finger color you want.
- Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and chill for about 20 minutes. Then remove from fridge and roll into about 1 1/4 inch balls.
- Roll each ball of dough into a long finger shape about 4-5 inches long. Press an almond into the end of each finger shape. Using a toothpick make indentation marks to resemble creases in the finger.
- Place fingers on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. We lined them up on the cookie sheet. They don’t spread very much when cooking, but you will want to spread them about 1 1/2 inches apart. Heat oven to 325 degrees F.
- Bake for 10-15 minutes or until set. You don’t want to overcook these fingers or they will be very dry. But you do need them to be cooked through so they don’t break in half.
- Let cool completely before adding the gel under the fingernail. When cookies are cooled, carefully pull off the almond nail and place some red gel (or jam) at the base of the nail bed. Then replace the almond pushing down gently so the gel will ooze out around the almond. The gel will also hold the almond in place so that it doesn’t fall off.
- At the other end of the finger, you can add more gel or jam to make the witch fingers even spookier. You can also leave them as they are. They are cute both ways. We love dipping these Spooky Witch Finger Cookies in jam. They are so delicious.
