We love having burgers in the summer, but sometimes there just isn’t time to grill up our favorite meal.

We decided to try our favorite turkey burgers in the slow cooker, and the result was amazing. These awesome summer sandwiches may just be our new favorite go to meal.

It’s like a hamburger, and a sloppy joe, come together to create a beautiful masterpiece. The Turkey allows it to give more flavor to the seasonings and sauce.

It really is a beautiful combination that your family and guests are going to love. It also feeds a crowd, so it’s perfect for big families or get togethers.

tips on how to make slow cooker turkey burger joes

  • This is a fairly easy recipe. It doesn’t require much time or attention and can be thrown together in minutes.The only thing I would really recommend, is making an extra batch for later next week. This recipe is so easy to double, because you don’t finish up, all the ingredients.The meat also freezes very well, so I like to make a little extra then we put it on wraps, or buns the next week.

    If you do plan to freeze this, I recommend placing it in foil, and applying two more layers to it, or putting it in an airtight container.

    When you are ready to serve, remove from the freezer the night before and let it thaw out in the fridge, or place it in a pan over the stove, to heat up.

  • I also recommend, if you will be gone longer throughout the day, to cook your meat on low for 4 hours, instead of high for 2.If you are home, throughout the day, we also recommend stirring and combining ingredients throughout the day, to avoid the meat burning, at the bottom.
  • If you love a quick cleanup, you may also consider using a slow cooker liner, or spraying your slow cooker with non-stick cooking spray.

velveeta cheese substitute

Not a Velveeta fan? Don’t stress, this is an easy fix. I have never really loved Velveeta. I like it on my grilled cheese and this recipe, but that’s about it.

You can easily replace Velveeta with two cups of sharp cheddar cheese and one half cup of milk, preferably whole or 2% milk.

Melt it all together in a sauce pan, stirring continually, and add it to the recipe, when called for.

I used a whisk to stir it, but you could also use a wooden spoon to do the stirring.

Ingredients

  • 1 Pound Ground Turkey
  • 1/4 Chopped Onion
  • 1 Tablespoon Prepared Mustard
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • 2 Tablespoons Ketchup
  • 2 Tablespoons Barbecue Sauce
  • 2 Tablespoons Chopped Dill Pickles
  • 1 Cup Shredded Velveeta Cheese

Instructions

  1. Brown 1 pound of ground turkey over the stove.
  2. In a bowl, mix together onion, mustard, garlic powder, ketchup, barbecue sauce, and chopped pickles.
  3. Place browned ground turkey in slow cooker and pour sauce mixture over top, along with the cheese. Mix gently to cover all the meat.
  4. Cook on high for 2 hours, stirring half way through.
  5. Serve on your favorite hamburger buns with your favorite condiments, and enjoy!
