I absolutely love those little chocolate oranges and look forward to them each Christmas season.

Last week I had to bring a dessert to a little dinner we had with friends and I decided to experiment with the chocolate and orange combo.

These little brownies are seriously a match made in chocolate heaven. I dare say, they rank right up there, with any chocolate and peanut butter combo.

So for all those chocolate orange lovers, you will definitely have to give these a try.

If you don’t love orange extract you could easily use a different flavor, such as:

You could easily use any extract, and make any flavor of brownie as you’d like. I personally love the chocolate orange for the Christmas holiday, but you could switch the flavor depending on the season.

could i use essential oils instead of extract?

You most definitely could use essential oils, instead of flavored extracts. I would do a few drops at a time, and taste test, according to preference, depending on how strong you like your orange.

I personally prefer using extracts, and they are cheaper, but both would work.

Chocolate Orange Brownies Recipe

  • Brownies:
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/3 cup cocoa
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoon vanilla
  • Orange Frosting:
  • 3/4 cup butter, softened
  • 3 Tablespoons milk
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon orange extract
  • red and yellow food coloring
  • Chocolate Ganache Topping:
  • 2 1/4 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 3/4 cup butter


  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. In a bowl, beat together butter, sugar, and cocoa. Once it's completely mixed, add 4 eggs one at a time, mixing after each one. 
  3. Add flour, salt and vanilla and mix well. Spread on large (10x15x1 inch) greased cookie sheet or jelly roll pan. 
  4. Bake for 22-25 minutes and remove from oven once finished.
  5. Let cool for 30-60 minutes (stick in the freezer for about 15-20 minutes to speed up the cooling process).
  6. For the orange frosting, mix butter, milk, powdered sugar and extract. Add food coloring (I used about 10 drops of yellow and 3 drops of red to get my pale orange color).
  7. Frost brownies and then put in freezer for another 20 minutes.
  8. Melt chocolate chips and butter in the microwave and spread on top of the frosting layer.
  9. Freeze another 20 minutes to set.

  1. Made these, only I didn't have orange extract, so I used mint instead. They turned out AMAZING!! Can't wait to try the orange variety. Check out the link to my blog to make them gluten-free: Thanks Six Sisters for another amazing recipe! I think half the recipes on my blog are from you, I just adjust them to make them gluten-free and I haven't had any that didn't turn out great!
