Everyone always says that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I’m not sure if that’s totally true, but why not start your day with a protein packed and nutritious meal?
We love having smoothies in the morning, but they are not always super filling. This Banana Breakfast Smoothie is much different! We packed it full of protein, whole grains, and other filling nutrients to keep you going strong all day.
We used a Magic Bullet Blender for this recipe, but any blender or smoothie blender works great! Make sure to use a larger blender if you plan on doubling this recipe.
Substitution for Almond Milk in Smoothies
We know almond milk can be an acquired taste! Here are a few options you can substitute in instead.
- Skim Milk
- Greek Yogurt
- Water
- Coconut Milk
- Soy Milk
how to freeze bananas for your smoothies
Before we talk about freezing our bananas, choosing the level of ripeness is important too! We like to use medium ripe bananas in this recipe, before they turn completely brown but there is no more green on the peel.
Bananas that have more time to ripen have more time to develop natural sugars, so they will sweeten your smoothie a little more.
You’ll want to make your frozen bananas ahead of time. Start by removing the peel, cut them into fourths, and place them in a large gallon, ziplock bag.
Seal your bag, pushing all the air out, and put them in the freezer. They are ready to go in your smoothies about an hour or two later.
They are easy to pull apart once they are frozen, so feel free to freeze a large quantity for a week’s worth of smoothies!
I usually don’t keep my bananas in the freezer for more than four weeks, because then I feel like they start tasting like the freezer, losing their sweetness.
